Como ya se adelantó en la sinopsis (la cual es bastante extensa y detallada) ‘Una magia más oscura’ está ambientada en cuatro mundos diferentes, en particular en una ciudad: Londres. Primero que nada, quiero confesar que compré este libro por dos razones: primero que amo Londres, es una de mis ciudades favoritas; y segundo, que fue uno de los pocos libros que me atrapó sólo con leer la sinopsis. Ahora sí, a hablar de la historia.

Siempre quise leer algo de V. E. Schwab porque había escuchado muy buenos comentarios acerca de su escritura y de sus libros. Sinceramente quería leer su otra saga de libros que es a la que pertenece ‘El archivo’. Sin embargo, haber empezado por este libro me gustó muchísimo.

Entonces empecemos. Yo amo con todo mi ser la fantasía y todo lo que tiene que ver con la magia. Pero cuando la magia y la fantasía se mezclan con algo oscuro y con tintes de la realidad, eso ya se convierte en amor. De todas formas, pienso que Schwab podría haber profundizado mucho más en esa parte ‘oscura’ del mundo en el que viven (tal vez lo hace en los próximos libros que todavía no he leído) pero me encantaría conocer más acerca del Londres Negro y de su historia.

En cuanto a los personajes Kell me pareció un personaje bastante básico, hubiera sido más interesante si hubiera tenido un pasado más extraño o misterioso. Sin embargo, lo compensó muchísimo Delilah, ya que es un personaje femenino con un carácter bastante fuerte y quien sí tiene un pasado misterioso y desconocido, lo que la vuelve de lo más interesante. Complementa muchísimo con Kell y desde el primer momento amé la conexión que tuvieron ambos. Delilah tiene un gran sentido del humor y es muy despreocupada, lo que hace que Kell deje de ser tan distante y rígido y se lance en la aventura.

Como ya mencionamos, esta historia transcurre en diferentes Londres y, en mi opinión, el más interesante es el Londres Blanco. La razón es que es un lugar tan oscuro (irónico que se llame Blanco) y tan corrompido que, cada vez que Kell estaba allí literalmente contenía el aliento por la incertidumbre e inseguridad que eso me generaba: no saber qué es lo que va a pasar. La presencia de Athos y Astrid Dane y la importancia que obtienen a lo largo del libro generan cierta dinámica a la historia.

Debo decir que me fue muy grato leer este libro. Si bien no fue un libro que me ‘devoré’, me gusto bastante y no diría que la historia es mala ni nada por el estilo. Lo único que criticaría es que tiene un principio muy lento, en el cual no ocurre nada interesante, y esto se prolonga por mucho tiempo en el libro. Creo que habré leído alrededor de siete u ocho capítulos hasta que ocurrió algo que más o menos rompía con el orden del libro. La parte más interesante del libro son los últimos capítulos y éste termina con un final bastante abierto para dar introducción al próximo.

No diría que me encantó este libro, pero no me disgustó y definitivamente leería los próximos para saber qué es lo que ocurre y si puedo averiguar más cosas acerca del Londres Negro. Si leíste el libro, ¿vos que opinas?

As it was said in the synopsis (which was very long and detailed) ‘A darker shade of magic’ is set in four different worlds, particularly in one city: London. First of all, I want to confess that I bought this book for two reasons: first I love London, it is one of my favorite cities; second, it was one of the few books that caught me by only reading the synopsis. But now let’s get into the story.

I’ve always wanted to read something by V. E. Schwab because I’d heard a lot of good comments about her writing and books. Sincerely I wanted to read another series of hers (the one that has The Archive). Anyway, I really liked meeting her by this book.

Now let’s truly begin. I love with all my heart everything that has to do with fantasy and magic. But when all that starts getting darker (and kind of real) that’s TRUE LOVE. Anyway, I think that Schwab could’ve gone deeper in that dark part of the world they live in (maybe she does it in her next book which I haven’t read yet – recently I found out she does) but I’d love to know more about the Black London and its history.

About the characters, I think Kell was kind of a basic character (don’t hate me because of this). It would have been more interesting if his past were more strange or mysterious. Anyway, it was balanced with Delilah who is a strong and independent woman and who, in fact, HAS a mysterious and unknown past, which makes her much more interesting. Kell and Lilah make such an amazing duo and I loved the connection that they had from the very first. Delilah has a great sense of humor and it’s very relaxed which makes Kell to stop being so correct and rigid and go for adventure.

As it was mentioned, this story takes place in different Londons and, in my opinion, the most interesting of them all is the White London. The reason is that it is a very dark place (it’s ironic that it’s called White, I loved what she did there – if she did it on purpose) and so corrupted that, every time Kell was there I literally held my breath because of the uncertainty of not knowing what’s going to happen there. Also, the presence of Athos and Astrid Dane (and the importance they get throughout the story) makes everything more dynamic.

I have to say that I had a great time reading this book. Even if it wasn’t a book that I read really fast, I liked it very much and I wouldn’t say the story is bad or anything. The only thing I would criticize is that it has a slow beginning, in which nothing interesting happens, and this remains for a lot of chapters. I think that I was into seven or eight chapters until something important happened. The most interesting part of this book is the last two chapters and it ends with such an open ending that REALLY makes you want to read the next books.

So if you like magic but also darkness this book is for you. Maybe I didn’t like it that much but, as I said, I wouldn’t miss reading this book for anything. I really think this is such an amazing trilogy.

Darkness, magic, betrayal, adventure and mistery. This book has it all. Don’t. miss. It.
